Small and medium businesses are an important part of India's economy, but many enterprises struggle to arrange affordable capital when they want to expand. To address this challenge, the Union Budget 2026–27 announced a dedicated ₹10,000 crore SME Growth Fund aimed at helping promising small and medium enterprises scale up and become larger, more competitive businesses.
The initiative is part of the government's broader plan to strengthen India's MSME sector and improve access to finance, technology and markets.
What is the SME Growth Fund?
The ₹10,000 crore SME Growth Fund has been announced to provide equity support to selected small and medium enterprises with the potential to grow into future industry leaders.
Unlike a conventional loan, equity support is intended to provide capital without creating the same type of repayment obligation as debt. The government says support will be provided to enterprises according to defined eligibility criteria.
Which businesses can benefit?
The fund is aimed at eligible small and medium enterprises that demonstrate strong growth potential.
Businesses will need to meet the applicable criteria before receiving support. Therefore, simply having an MSME or Udyam registration does not automatically mean that a company will receive money from the fund.
The initiative is particularly focused on helping promising enterprises expand their operations and improve their competitiveness.
Why is the government focusing on MSMEs?
MSMEs contribute significantly to employment, manufacturing, exports and local economic activity. However, smaller businesses can face difficulties when trying to access sufficient growth capital.
The government has therefore introduced several measures in Budget 2026–27 to improve access to finance and help MSMEs expand. The SME Growth Fund is one of the major equity-support measures announced for this purpose.
More financial support for small businesses
The SME Growth Fund is not the only measure announced for MSMEs.
The government has also proposed increasing support through the Self-Reliant India Fund by ₹2,000 crore. According to the government, the fund had already supported 682 MSMEs with investments worth ₹15,442 crore as of November 30, 2025.
Other measures are also aimed at improving liquidity for MSMEs through platforms such as TReDS, which facilitates financing against trade receivables.
What is TReDS?
TReDS is an electronic platform that helps MSMEs get their outstanding invoices financed through participating financiers.
The government has proposed several changes to strengthen this system, including CGTMSE-backed credit guarantee support for invoice discounting and integration between GeM and TReDS.
These measures are intended to help businesses receive money against their receivables faster and reduce working-capital pressure.
Is this money available to every small business?
No. The ₹10,000 crore figure represents the overall size of the proposed SME Growth Fund, not an automatic ₹10,000 crore payment to individual businesses.
Eligible enterprises will need to meet the conditions and selection criteria applicable to the fund.
Business owners should therefore be careful about websites, agents or social-media posts claiming that every MSME is entitled to a fixed amount under the scheme.
Why this scheme matters
For a growing business, access to equity capital can make it easier to invest in technology, increase production capacity, enter new markets and create jobs.
The government's broader objective is to help promising MSMEs move beyond small-scale operations and develop into competitive Indian companies.
If you run a small or medium business, it is worth keeping an eye on official government announcements regarding the implementation and eligibility rules of the SME Growth Fund rather than relying on unofficial claims.
