Social Media Government's digital strike The Ministry of Electronics and Information and Broadcasting Facebook Instagram WhatsApp Telegram Google YouTube
The central government has tightened its grip on major digital players. The Ministry of Electronics and Information and Broadcasting has added new and strict rules to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules 2021, IT Rules 2021. This has dealt a major blow to social media companies. These platforms will be forced to act as intermediaries between users and content. The government's new rules have shaken the foundations of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, as well as Google and YouTube. The arbitrariness of these companies will be curbed.
Many social media platforms act as intermediaries between users and content. People post content, and others view it. These include messaging and social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Telegram, search and video platforms like Google and YouTube, e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, and OTT platforms like Netflix and Prime. These platforms will face stricter regulations.
Strict policy on news and content on social media
A major change has been made to Rule 8. Now, content related to news and current affairs will be closely monitored. These rules will no longer be limited to just publishing news. Social media, where such news or content is posted, will also be closely monitored. This means that if a user forwards such news on Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, or posts it on Facebook, they will be monitored. These platforms will also be held accountable for false or misleading information.
Users will also be affected
This means that it will now be dangerous for users to forward or share such content. If you are blindly forwarding such content and someone complains about it, strict action will be taken under this rule. Such actions will increase, and users will suffer the consequences. Therefore, users must be cautious when sharing content on social media platforms.
