Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle (CV) business delivered a strong performance in the second quarter of FY2026–27, returning to profitability on the back of robust domestic demand and a sharp increase in exports. The company reported a net profit of ₹1,254 crore for the July–September quarter, compared with a loss of ₹561 crore in the corresponding period last year.
Revenue from operations climbed 36.5% year-on-year to ₹25,232 crore, up from ₹18,491 crore a year earlier. While the latest results reflect improving demand for trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles, management has indicated that growth could moderate during the second half of the financial year.
Tata Motors’ Commercial Vehicle Business Returns to Profit
The commercial vehicle division recorded a significant financial turnaround during the quarter. Consolidated profit after tax (PAT) reached ₹1,254 crore, compared with a loss of ₹561 crore in the same quarter of the previous financial year.
The improvement was supported by stronger business performance and a reduction in losses arising from market fluctuations on the company’s investment in Tata Capital Limited.
Tata Motors also reported a net cash position of ₹15,900 crore as of September 30, 2026. This provides the business with financial flexibility to support its operations, invest in future opportunities and manage its capital requirements.
Revenue growth was another major highlight, reflecting higher sales volumes and improving business momentum across domestic and international markets.
Domestic Sales Rise 30%, While Exports Jump 177%
Demand for Tata Motors’ commercial vehicles strengthened considerably during the July–September quarter. Domestic sales volumes increased 30% year-on-year, while exports surged 177%, highlighting the growing contribution of international markets.
The company’s domestic commercial vehicle market share reached 36.2% in the first half of FY2026–27, an improvement of 1.10 percentage points compared with the corresponding period of FY2025–26.
The growth across domestic and overseas markets indicates that demand for the company’s commercial vehicle portfolio remains an important driver of its financial performance.
Tata Motors’ Market Share Across Commercial Vehicle Categories
The company maintained a strong presence across several commercial vehicle segments during the reporting period.
| Commercial vehicle category | Market share |
|---|---|
| Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCV) | 55.7% |
| Intermediate, Light and Medium Vehicles | 36.3% |
| Small Commercial Vehicles and Pickups | 27.6% |
| Commercial Passenger Vehicles | 41.1% |
Tata Motors’ market position in heavy commercial vehicles remains particularly strong, with a reported share of 55.7%. Its presence in passenger-carrying commercial vehicles also reflects its role in India’s public transport and mobility markets.
New Products and Technology Initiatives Strengthen the Portfolio
During the quarter, Tata Motors continued to expand its product offerings and showcase new commercial mobility solutions.
The company introduced next-generation passenger mobility solutions at Prawaas 5.0 and launched the Starbus Prime range alongside Ultra Prime. It also presented new vehicle components and technologies at Bauma CONEXPO India 2026.
In addition to these product developments, the company received the ‘Best Truck of the Year’ award at the Logistics & Transport Awards 2026 in the UAE. Such initiatives support its efforts to strengthen its product portfolio and expand its presence in domestic and international markets.
Iveco Deal Moves Closer to Completion
Tata Motors said its proposed transaction with Iveco was progressing towards completion by the end of October 2026.
According to the company’s update, the necessary regulatory approvals had been received and the tender offer for purchasing shares had been initiated. The offer was scheduled to remain open until October 26, 2026.
At a meeting held on October 16, Iveco shareholders approved all the proposals. Subject to the successful completion of the tender offer, payment and settlement were scheduled for October 30, 2026.
The proposed transaction represents a significant development in Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle strategy. As preparations for the next phase of business consolidation move forward, the company plans to focus on operational efficiency, new business opportunities and long-term value creation.
Tata Motors Shares Decline Despite Strong Quarterly Results
Despite the improvement in profitability and revenue, Tata Motors shares ended lower on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Friday.
The stock declined 4.41% to close at ₹396, compared with its previous closing price of ₹414.25. It had fallen 7.89% since the beginning of 2026.
At the reported closing price, the company’s market capitalisation stood at approximately ₹1,45,838.46 crore.
The decline in the share price, despite strong quarterly results, highlights that stock market performance depends on more than reported earnings alone. Investors may also assess future demand, operating costs, growth expectations and the outlook for the second half of the financial year.
What Lies Ahead for Tata Motors’ Commercial Vehicle Business?
Tata Motors’ second-quarter performance reflects a strong recovery, supported by rising domestic sales, rapid export growth and a return to profitability. Its healthy net cash position and continued product launches also provide a foundation for future business development.
However, management’s expectation of some moderation in growth during the second half of FY2026–27 remains an important factor to watch. Investors will be looking for signs that sales momentum can be sustained while the company manages costs and advances its proposed Iveco transaction.
Overall, the latest results mark a strong quarter for Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle business. Whether this performance translates into sustained growth will depend on demand conditions, export momentum, operational execution and developments in the coming quarters.
