T20 World Cup 2026: Virender Sehwag, using a coincidence, predicted that Team India would win the T20 World Cup in 2026. So let's find out how this coincidence happened.
The T20 World Cup 2026 has been quite interesting so far. Zimbabwe defeated Australia in the opening round to create one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history. Now, former Indian batting legend Virender Sehwag has virtually declared Team India the winner of this T20 World Cup, citing a major coincidence.
It's worth noting that this wasn't the first time Zimbabwe had defeated Australia in the World Cup. The Zimbabwean team had done so twice before. Interestingly, both times Zimbabwe defeated Australia, Team India won the World Cup.
Sehwag made a coincidence
Sharing a post on social media, Sehwag explained the perfect coincidence of Zimbabwe's victory and India's rise to the title. Zimbabwe defeated Australia for the first time in the 1983 ODI World Cup. This was also the year Team India won its first World Cup title. India won this title under the captaincy of the legendary Kapil Dev.
Zimbabwe then defeated Australia in the 2007 T20 World Cup. This was the first edition of the T20 World Cup, in which the Men in Blue won the title under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
Now, Zimbabwe has defeated Australia in the 2026 T20 World Cup, making Team India's chances of becoming the champion seem likely. It will be interesting to see whether the Indian team can win its second consecutive title. In the last T20 World Cup, in 2024, Team India, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, won the T20 World Cup trophy.
India's performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup
It's worth noting that Team India has played two league matches in the 2026 T20 World Cup, against the USA and Namibia. Team India won both matches by 29 and 93 runs, respectively. The Men in Blue will next face Pakistan on Sunday, February 15th.
