The Great Onion War: Bobby Deol Reveals Hilarious 29-Year-Old 'Revenge' Secret Involving Manisha Koirala

Bollywood’s beloved "Lord Bobby," Bobby Deol, is currently riding a wave of massive success, but it’s a hilarious blast from the past that has fans in stitches. During a recent appearance on the popular show Aap Ki Adalat, the actor took a trip down memory lane to reveal a 29-year-old secret from the sets of his iconic 1997 suspense thriller Gupt—explaining exactly why he once flatly refused to shoot a romantic scene with his co-star, Manisha Koirala.

A Cold Day, a Spicy Snack, and a Cancelled Romance

Addressing the lighthearted accusation that he used to prank his leading ladies a bit too much, Bobby laughed and recalled a particularly pungent day on set.

"We were shooting a song in the freezing cold," Bobby shared. "Someone was selling Chana Jor Garam near the set, and Manisha was eating it with absolute relish, loaded with a massive amount of raw onion. Right after that, we had a close-up romantic sequence where she was supposed to playfully bite my chin."

The romantic mood was instantly shattered. As soon as Manisha got close, the overpowering smell of raw onions hit the actor. "It became physically impossible for me to give a romantic expression!" Bobby admitted. "I got totally put off and refused to do the scene right then and there."

The Plot for Revenge: A Plan That Backfired

Determined not to let the onion incident slide, a young and mischievous Bobby devised a mastermind plan for sweet revenge.

For the very next sequence, a newcomer actor was supposed to film a scene where he confronts and beats up Bobby's character. Seeing his opportunity, Bobby pulled the young actor aside.

"I told the new guy, 'If you really want to improve your acting and deliver a powerful shot, you need to eat a lot of raw onions right now,'" Bobby confessed with a laugh. "I fed him a mountain of onions, hoping that when he filmed his scene close to Manisha, she would have to endure the exact same ordeal!"

The punchline? The revenge fell completely flat. "Manisha wasn’t affected by the smell at all! We were just so young and naive back then, constantly doing silly things like that," he recalled.

From Stomach Aches to a Spy Universe: Bobby's Work Front

The actor also shared a funny anecdote from his debut film Barsaat, revealing that a childhood habit of constantly complaining about his sensitive stomach on set deeply irritated his co-star, Twinkle Khanna—so much so that she exposed his digestive struggles to the world in her very first media interview!

Fast forward to today, Bobby Deol has completely transitioned into one of Indian cinema's favorite on-screen villains. Fans can next look forward to seeing him unleash terror as the main antagonist in Yash Raj Films’ upcoming spy-thriller Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari Wagh.
