Train Wheel Cost: A train wheel isn't just a means of transportation; it's also a testament to a multi-million dollar investment. Let's find out how much a train wheel costs to make and how strong it is.
Railways are often considered the cheapest mode of transport for the common man, but the technology and costs behind this affordable journey are extremely expensive. Looking at a train parked on a platform, one might hardly imagine that each component could cost lakhs of rupees. Especially the wheels, which carry hundreds of tons of weight every moment. Knowing their value raises the question of how much the railways invest in safety and robustness.
Indian Railways is one of the largest rail networks in the world. With over 7,500 railway stations across the country, over 13,000 passenger trains operate daily. Millions of passengers travel by train daily.
To run this massive system, thousands of crores of rupees are spent every year on tracks, stations, signal systems, and coach manufacturing. Every part of a train, especially the wheels, is crucial for safety and balance.
A train wheel isn't just a round piece of iron. It's made from a special steel alloy to withstand heavy weight, high speeds, and constant friction.
The wheel is designed to maintain stability on the tracks and resist slippage. Therefore, its manufacturing is carried out using high technology, quality testing, and international standards.
According to media reports and railway data, there are two types of train wheels: indigenous and imported. The imported wheels cost around 70,000 rupees.

These wheels are imported from abroad and assembled at the railway's locomotive or coach factory. While indigenous wheels may cost slightly less, there's no compromise on quality and durability.
A passenger coach typically has eight wheels. Consequently, the wheels alone cost approximately ₹5.6 lakh per coach. For an express train with 14 to 18 coaches, the cost of the wheels alone can reach several crores of rupees.
