For years, the Shatabdi Express has been one of India's most popular choices for comfortable daytime travel between major cities. Now, the Vande Bharat Express has emerged as a modern alternative, offering upgraded interiors, faster acceleration and several new passenger-friendly features.

Both trains are designed primarily for daytime journeys and offer air-conditioned Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC) seating. Meals and refreshments are also provided on many services depending on the journey and timing.

However, there are several important differences between the two. Here's what passengers should know before booking their tickets.

Speed: Vande Bharat Has the Edge

Vande Bharat trains are designed to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h on railway sections where the infrastructure permits it. The Tughlakabad–Agra section is among the routes where this higher speed has been achieved.

A major advantage of Vande Bharat is its rapid acceleration and braking, which can help reduce travel time on suitable routes.

Shatabdi trains generally operate at lower maximum speeds, with some services reaching around 130 km/h.

However, a higher top speed does not automatically mean a shorter journey. Actual travel time depends on the route, number of stops, track conditions, congestion and the scheduled timetable.

Both Are Designed for Daytime Travel

Both Vande Bharat and Shatabdi are primarily designed for seated daytime journeys rather than overnight travel.

Vande Bharat services are generally aimed at medium- and long-distance routes, with many connections covering distances that can be completed within several hours.

Shatabdi trains, meanwhile, have traditionally been associated with convenient same-day travel between major cities, making them popular for business trips and short visits.

Comfort and Interiors

Both trains provide AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car options, although the exact configuration can vary by service.

Vande Bharat features a newer interior design with modern passenger amenities such as reclining seats, charging points and individual reading lights. Executive Chair Car coaches offer additional space and comfort, with rotating seats available in certain configurations.

Shatabdi coaches also provide comfortable AC seating, although the interiors vary depending on the particular rake and service.

One feature that some Shatabdi services can offer is a Vistadome coach. These coaches have large windows and glass roofs, providing passengers with wider views of the surrounding landscape. They are available only on selected routes.

Shatabdi, on the other hand, is a locomotive-hauled train. A separate electric locomotive pulls the passenger coaches.

Vande Bharat trainsets generally operate in fixed formations, such as eight, 16 or 20 coaches, while Shatabdi trains use conventional rakes whose composition can vary depending on the particular service.

There isn't one universal choice that is best for every journey. The better option depends on the specific route and your priorities.

If you prefer a newer train design, modern amenities and potentially shorter travel times on suitable routes, Vande Bharat may appeal to you.

If you value the established Shatabdi experience, a particular schedule, or a route offering a Vistadome coach, Shatabdi may be worth considering.
