Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh - A distressing video circulating on social media has brought the Government Children Home at Bareilly turn back into the spotlight, exposing alleged cruelty towards 13 orphaned children. The viral footage reportedly shows caretaker Poonam Gangwar physically abusing the children, including hitting them with a stick, slapping them, and pulling their ears.
According to District Panchayat member Mukesh Dixit, the incident captured in the video took place in September 2024. Dixit claims he lodged a complaint with higher authorities on December 31, 2024, but no action was taken. Frustrated by the lack of response, he escalated the matter to Lucknow and, ultimately, posted the video on social media, leading to its widespread circulation and drawing public outcry.
The viral video prompted immediate action from the district administration. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) initiated an investigation based on the complaint and the visual evidence. Following the inquiry, instructions were issued to terminate the service of caretaker Poonam Gangwar. Additionally, an explanation has been sought from the District Probation Officer regarding the delayed response to the initial complaint.
This is not the first time the Government Children Home has faced controversy for similar allegations. The current incident has raised serious questions about the oversight and accountability within the facility, particularly given claims that the matter was suppressed after the initial complaint in 2024. It is alleged that the caretaker's proximity to a departmental official may have contributed to the inaction, allowing the abuse to continue.
The incident underscores the critical need for stricter monitoring and enforcement of child protection laws in children's homes to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable children.
