A Chinese woman spent 35 days in a survival competition, eating 50 rats and losing 14 kilograms. For this achievement, she was awarded a bronze medal and prize money.
Surviving in the harsh conditions of a jungle is incredibly challenging, but it also teaches us the art of survival anywhere. Well, a similar competition was held in China. A woman who won a bronze medal has shared her experience. 25-year-old Shao Tiju says that the competition not only won her a medal or boosted her confidence and strength, but it also helped her lose 14 kilograms.
The Wilderness Survival Competition began on October 1st on an island in eastern China's Zhejiang Province. Shao survived until November 5th, a period of 35 days. She earned third place for surviving this long. She received a prize of 7,500 yuan (Rs 88,608). She also received an additional 6,000 yuan (Rs 74,430) for those who completed 30 days, plus 300 yuan (Rs 3,544) per day.
Shao faced many difficulties while living on the island. The 40-degree heat left her hands dry and her feet infested with insect bites. All of this took a toll on her health. Nevertheless, she says that despite all these challenges, losing from 85 kilograms to 71 kilograms was a major achievement.
Shao says she lost weight by eating a protein-rich diet she found in the wild. Crabs, sea urchins, and abalone were her mainstays. Furthermore, over the course of 35 days, she hunted, cleaned, and roasted 50 rats. Even after being eliminated from the competition, she brought some rat meat with her to eat. Shao says rats are very tasty.
After a typhoon hit the island on November 4th, Shao decided to withdraw from the competition. She said she had achieved her goal and now wanted to go home and rest in her bed. Organizers, however, say two men are still on the island as part of the competition. The winner will receive a prize of approximately 700,000 rupees.
