WhatsApp is testing a small but useful feature that could make it easier to identify conversations containing recently shared media. The messaging platform is rolling out media thumbnails in the chat list to some Android beta users, allowing them to see a preview of the latest photo, video or sticker without opening the conversation.

The feature is currently being tested gradually, so it may not be available to every WhatsApp user yet.

What Has Changed?

Previously, when someone sent you a photo or video, the chat list generally displayed a simple label such as "Photo" or "Video" below the contact's name.

With the new feature, WhatsApp can show a small thumbnail of the actual media alongside the label. This means you can get an idea of what was recently shared without opening the chat.

For example, if several people have recently sent you photos, you can identify the relevant conversation by looking at the thumbnail instead of opening each chat one by one.

Videos and Stickers Also Get Previews

The feature isn't limited to photographs.

WhatsApp is also testing thumbnails for videos and stickers. The existing text labels remain visible, so users can still distinguish between different types of media.

This could be particularly useful for people who receive a large number of messages throughout the day and want to quickly locate a particular photo, video or sticker.

Is the Feature Available to Everyone?

Not yet.

The media-thumbnail feature has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.32.11 and is being rolled out gradually to selected beta testers. Even users enrolled in the beta programme may not see it immediately because WhatsApp is enabling the feature in stages.

WhatsApp has not yet announced when the feature will reach the stable Android version or whether the same interface will be introduced on iPhone.

You Don't Need a Paid Subscription

The thumbnail preview is being tested as a standard WhatsApp feature and is not tied to the company's paid personalization options.

This is useful because the feature improves the basic chat-list experience rather than adding a premium-only function.

WhatsApp Is Adding More Cross-Device Features

The thumbnail update comes as WhatsApp continues to expand beyond its traditional smartphone messaging experience.

The company recently introduced improvements for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing users to access messages and calls more conveniently while driving. WhatsApp has also enabled direct account registration on iPad and added the ability to open and lightly annotate PDFs within WhatsApp on web and desktop.

These updates show WhatsApp's broader focus on making the service work more seamlessly across phones, tablets, computers and cars.

What Should Users Do?

If you are a regular WhatsApp user, keep the app updated to receive new features as they become available.

If you are using the beta version, remember that beta features can change before a wider release. A feature appearing in beta does not guarantee that it will immediately reach every user.

For now, the new media preview is a simple addition, but it could be particularly convenient for people who receive lots of photos, videos and stickers every day.

Instead of opening multiple chats just to find the right photo or video, you may soon be able to spot it directly from the WhatsApp chat list.
