WhatsApp Privacy Tricks: 8 Settings You Should Change to Keep Your Personal Life Private

WhatsApp conversations often contain personal photographs, family discussions, office messages and sensitive information. While the app offers several privacy controls, many users continue using the default settings without realising that they can customise who sees their information and how others interact with them.
If you want greater control over your WhatsApp account, these eight settings are worth checking.
1. Hide Your Online Status From Selected People
Do you want to use WhatsApp without everyone knowing when you are online? You can control the visibility of your online status.
Open Settings, select Privacy, and tap Last Seen and Online. You can restrict your last-seen information to selected contacts or nobody, and choose who can see when you are online.
For example, you can set your online visibility to match your last-seen setting so that people you have excluded cannot see your online status.
2. Stop People From Adding You to Unwanted Groups
Being added to random groups can be annoying and may expose your phone number to unfamiliar people.
Open Settings, go to Privacy and select Groups. Depending on the options available, you can allow everyone, your contacts or your contacts except selected people to add you to groups directly.
When someone excluded by your settings wants to add you, they may need to send you a private invitation instead.
3. Lock WhatsApp With Your Fingerprint or Face ID
If someone occasionally uses your phone, an additional app lock can help protect your conversations.
On supported devices, open WhatsApp Settings, select Privacy and look for App Lock, Fingerprint Lock or Screen Lock.
Enable the feature and select the available authentication method. The exact label and options depend on your phone and app version.
Remember that an app lock protects access to WhatsApp, but it does not replace your phone's screen lock or protect information already visible in notifications.
4. Hide Sensitive Conversations With Chat Lock
WhatsApp's Chat Lock feature lets you move selected conversations into a protected section.
Open the conversation, tap the contact or group name and choose Chat Lock. Follow the instructions to enable authentication.
On supported versions, you can also configure a secret code to hide the locked-chat folder from the main chat list.
This is useful for private conversations, but anyone who already has authorised access to your unlocked account may still be able to access other unprotected chats.
5. Control Who Can See Your Profile Photo
Your profile picture may reveal more about your personal life than you intend, particularly if you use WhatsApp for business or communicate with unfamiliar numbers.
Go to Settings, select Privacy and open Profile Photo. Choose the audience you are comfortable with, such as your contacts or a more restricted group.
You can review similar controls for your About information and status updates.
These options are particularly useful if you receive messages from unknown numbers or use WhatsApp to communicate with customers.
6. Stop Unknown Callers From Disturbing You
WhatsApp provides an option to silence calls from unknown numbers.
Open Settings, select Privacy and tap Calls. Enable Silence Unknown Callers if the option is available.
Calls from unknown numbers will not ring in the usual way, although they may still appear in your call list and notifications.
Keep in mind that a legitimate caller whose number you have not saved may also be silenced.
7. Protect Your Account With Two-Step Verification
A WhatsApp registration code should never be shared with another person. However, you can strengthen your account further by enabling two-step verification.
Open Settings, select Account and choose Two-step verification. Follow the instructions to set up the additional PIN and recovery details where available.
This adds another layer of protection if someone attempts to register your number on another device.
Never share your verification code or PIN with someone claiming to be a WhatsApp employee, bank representative or friend.
8. Limit What Others Can Do With Your Messages
For particularly sensitive conversations, check whether Advanced Chat Privacy is available.
This feature can restrict certain actions, including chat exports and automatic media saving, and can limit the use of AI features within supported conversations.
Open the relevant chat, tap the contact or group information and look for Advanced Chat Privacy.
It is an additional safeguard rather than a guarantee against copying. Someone may still photograph a screen using another device or manually record information.
Bonus Tip: Review Linked Devices
If you have ever used WhatsApp Web or the desktop application on a shared computer, review your linked devices regularly.
Open Settings and select Linked Devices. If you see a device you do not recognise or no longer use, log it out.
This is especially important after using a public or office computer.
Final Thoughts
WhatsApp privacy is not just about hiding messages. It also involves controlling your visibility, restricting unwanted group invitations and protecting access to your account.
Start by reviewing your Privacy settings, enabling two-step verification and checking linked devices. You do not need to change every setting, but choosing the controls that suit your needs can help you use WhatsApp with greater confidence.
