WhatsApp Scam Alert: Do not download blurry or fuzzy photos from unknown numbers, or you may have to pay the price
The Cyber Security Department has issued a serious alert about a new cyber fraud. Scammers send photos via WhatsApp from unknown numbers. You download these images, and malware is installed on your smartphone. This virus then steals all the money from your bank account.
Don't click blurry WhatsApp photos.
Cybercriminals are targeting innocent people and their bank accounts with a highly advanced scam. This new fraud targets WhatsApp users in India and around the world.
Scammers send a casual message with a blurry photo, such as, "How are you? I hope you're well," or "Do you know this person?".
People usually avoid suspicious links, but out of curiosity, they click on these photos. You click on the photo, and the scammers drain every penny from your account.
How does this scam actually work?
An unknown number sends you a blurry photo disguised as a greeting, meme, holiday wish, or advertisement. You click the photo to download it, and dangerous malware or a fake app is secretly downloaded to your smartphone.
This malware immediately starts sending your private data to scammers. It hacks your banking apps, steals your passwords, and instantly transfers your money.
The authorities have strictly advised people not to open or click on any files, links or photos from unknown numbers.
Safety Steps to Avoid This WhatsApp Scam
To stay safe, you need to change your WhatsApp settings immediately. Open WhatsApp Settings and select the Storage & Data option. You need to completely turn off the media auto-download feature.
Disable automatic downloads for all three options: when using mobile data, when connected to Wi-Fi, and when roaming.
You should also warn older people, less tech-savvy users, and those who cannot read or write about this dangerous scam.
