WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has been looking for new ways to generate revenue for some time now. Over the past year, reports suggested that the company was testing advertisements within the Status and Channels sections. While this move received strong backlash from many users, Meta appears determined to move forward with its plans. As a result, users may now start seeing ads while browsing statuses or following channels. To address users who prefer an uninterrupted experience, WhatsApp is reportedly preparing to introduce a subscription-based option.
What will change with a subscription?
According to media reports, WhatsApp is developing an “ad-free” subscription plan. Here’s what it could mean for users:
-
Ad-free experience: Subscribers will not see advertisements in the Status and Channels sections.
-
For non-subscribers: Users who do not opt for the subscription may continue to see ads while using these features.
-
Limited scope: At present, ads are expected to remain restricted to statuses and channels. There has been no indication that advertisements will appear in personal chats or voice and video calls.
Who will need to pay?
It is important to clarify that WhatsApp is not becoming a fully paid app. Core features such as messaging, voice calls, and video calls are expected to remain free for everyone. The subscription will be optional and aimed at users who want to remove ads from their experience. As of now, the company has not officially announced the subscription price or the timeline for its rollout.
