Which Religion Does ‘Babita Ji’ from Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah Follow? Here’s What Munmun Dutta Said

Munmun Dutta, famously known as 'Babita ji' from the long-running sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, has always remained in the limelight — not just for her on-screen character, but also for her personal life and social media presence. Recently, she drew attention when old photos of her visiting a mosque in the UAE resurfaced, leading some people to speculate about her religious beliefs.

To clarify, Munmun Dutta was born in Durgapur, West Bengal, into a Bengali Hindu family. She has proudly identified herself as a Hindu, particularly as a devotee of Goddess Durga. In response to the trolling she faced after sharing pictures of herself wearing a burqa at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, she firmly stated, “I am a proud Hindu, but if I am going to another country, I will respect the culture there as well.” She also urged people of other faiths to extend the same respect to her religion and beliefs.

The viral pictures that stirred debate were from her visit to the UAE, where she respectfully followed the local customs by donning a burqa and hijab while visiting the mosque. Despite facing some online criticism, Munmun maintained a graceful stance and emphasized that respecting other cultures doesn't mean abandoning one’s own faith.

Aside from her religious identity, Munmun Dutta has carved a strong niche for herself in Indian television. She started her career as a child singer on Akashvani and Doordarshan, completed her Master's in English from Kolkata, and made her acting debut with Hum Sab Baraati in 2004. She's also appeared in a few Bollywood films like Kamal Haasan’s Mumbai Express and Holiday, but it was Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah that brought her massive popularity.
