Kolkata is famous not only for its grand architecture but also for the remarkable stories hidden behind its historic homes. Among them, the Janbazar Rajbari, associated with the legendary Rani Rashmoni, holds a special place. Interestingly, three separate Durga Pujas are celebrated every year within this historic Rajbari. But why are there three different celebrations under the same roof? The answer lies in the fascinating history of the Rashmoni family.

The Story of Janbazar Rajbari

The history of this magnificent mansion dates back to 1805, when wealthy businessman Babu Pritaram Das began constructing the sprawling residence. His son, Babu Raj Chandra Das, completed the construction in 1813.

The Rajbari was far more than an ordinary residence. The enormous complex reportedly had nearly 300 rooms, six large courtyards, a Thakur Dalan, a Nat Mandir, an armory and even a pond. It became an important centre of the family's social and religious activities.

Following the sudden death of Raj Chandra Das, his wife, Rani Rashmoni, took charge of the family's vast estate and responsibilities. She went on to become one of Bengal's most influential women of the 19th century.

Why Are Three Durga Pujas Held Here?

The unusual tradition of three Durga Pujas has its roots in the division of the Rashmoni family's estate.

After Rani Rashmoni's death, the enormous property was divided among the families of her daughters. Over time, different sections of the original Rajbari came under the ownership and management of different branches of the family.

As a result, separate Durga Puja traditions developed within different sections of the historic mansion. Today, three distinct Durga Pujas continue to be celebrated in different parts of the old Janbazar Rajbari.

Despite being separate celebrations, all three Pujas remain connected to the same family heritage and preserve a tradition that has survived for generations.

Rani Rashmoni: A Woman Who Made History

Rani Rashmoni's legacy extends far beyond the walls of Janbazar Rajbari. After becoming a widow at a relatively young age, she took control of her family's extensive properties and financial affairs at a time when women had limited social and economic power.

She became known for her strong leadership and her willingness to challenge powerful authorities. Among her notable initiatives was her opposition to a tax imposed on fishermen using the Hooghly River.

Rani Rashmoni was also associated with several charitable and social initiatives. She supported the poor, contributed to educational and cultural institutions, and made donations to prominent institutions in Kolkata.

Her most famous legacy, however, remains the Dakshineswar Kali Temple, which she established and which later became closely associated with Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa.
