Paying for a 100 Mbps or even 300 Mbps broadband connection doesn't always guarantee fast internet. Many users blame their internet service provider when videos keep buffering or downloads take forever, but in reality, the problem often lies much closer to home. From router placement to outdated hardware, several overlooked factors can dramatically reduce your Wi-Fi speed.
One of the most common reasons behind slow internet is the location of the Wi-Fi router. Many people install it inside a cabinet, behind the television, or in a corner of the house where the signal has to pass through multiple walls. Since Wi-Fi signals weaken when they encounter obstacles like concrete walls, metal objects, and large furniture, placing the router in an open and central location can significantly improve coverage throughout the home.
Another issue is using an old router with a newly upgraded broadband plan. If your internet connection has been upgraded but the router still supports older Wi-Fi standards, it may not be capable of delivering the speeds you're paying for. Modern routers that support Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E are designed to handle multiple connected devices more efficiently while offering faster and more stable performance.
Many households also have dozens of connected devices without realizing it. Smartphones, smart TVs, laptops, tablets, security cameras, gaming consoles, smart speakers, and even smart bulbs share the same internet connection. When several of these devices are downloading updates, streaming videos, or backing up data simultaneously, your available bandwidth gets divided, making the internet appear slower.
The Wi-Fi frequency band you use can also make a noticeable difference. Most dual-band routers offer both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. The 2.4 GHz band provides better coverage over longer distances but generally offers lower speeds, while the 5 GHz band delivers much faster performance over shorter distances. Connecting compatible devices to the 5 GHz network can greatly improve streaming, gaming, and video calls.
Software is another factor that's often ignored. Router manufacturers regularly release firmware updates that improve performance, strengthen security, and fix bugs. If your router hasn't been updated for months or even years, it could be missing important optimizations that affect both speed and stability.
Interference from nearby electronic devices can also impact Wi-Fi performance. Microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, Bluetooth accessories, and even neighbouring Wi-Fi networks can interfere with wireless signals, especially in apartment buildings where dozens of routers operate close to one another. Changing the router's Wi-Fi channel or allowing it to automatically select the least congested channel can often improve performance.
Sometimes the issue isn't with Wi-Fi at all. If the internet feels slow even when using an Ethernet cable, the problem may lie with your broadband connection or internet service provider. Running an online speed test while connected through a cable can help determine whether the slowdown is caused by the Wi-Fi network or the internet connection itself.
Simple habits such as restarting the router every few weeks, updating its firmware, placing it in an open location, and using the appropriate Wi-Fi band can make a noticeable difference without spending any money. Before upgrading to a more expensive broadband plan, it's worth checking whether these small changes can unlock the full speed you're already paying for.
