YouTube has rolled out a major update aimed at making content more accessible worldwide. The platform has officially expanded its AI-powered Auto-Dubbing feature to all users, allowing viewers to listen to videos in 27 different languages. The feature automatically translates and dubs spoken content, enabling users to watch videos in their preferred language without relying solely on subtitles.
Originally introduced as a pilot project at VidCon 2023, Auto-Dubbing was initially limited to select informational and educational videos. With the latest update, the feature has been extended to all non-music videos across the platform, significantly broadening its reach.
How Auto-Dubbing Works
Auto-Dubbing uses artificial intelligence to transcribe the original audio, translate it into another language, and then generate a dubbed voice track. According to YouTube, this process helps break language barriers and allows creators to reach a global audience without manually creating multiple versions of their videos.
The feature now supports 27 languages, making it one of the most extensive AI-based dubbing systems available on a mainstream video platform.
More Natural AI Voices With Expressive Speech
To improve the listening experience, YouTube has introduced a new enhancement called Expressive Speech. This feature focuses on making AI-generated voices sound more natural by capturing the tone, emotion, and energy of the original speaker.
Expressive Speech is currently available in eight languages, including English, Hindi, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. The company claims this update reduces the robotic feel traditionally associated with AI dubbing.
Preferred Language Setting Offers Greater Control
YouTube has also added a Preferred Language setting to address user concerns about limited control over dubbed audio. Previously, Auto-Dubbing defaulted to the account’s primary language, which was inconvenient for multilingual users or those who preferred the original audio.
With the new setting, viewers can manually select their preferred dub language or disable Auto-Dubbing entirely, offering a more personalized viewing experience.
Lip Sync Testing and Smart Filters
In addition to dubbing improvements, YouTube is testing a Lip Sync feature that aligns translated audio with the speaker’s lip movements, making dubbed videos appear more natural. Similar technology has already been used on platforms like Instagram and Facebook Reels.
YouTube has also implemented smart video-level filters that automatically exclude content unsuitable for dubbing, such as music videos or silent vlogs, ensuring better accuracy and relevance.
With these updates, YouTube aims to make global content consumption smoother, more immersive, and language-inclusive for its billions of users worldwide.
