The demand for rugged, boxy SUVs in India is rising steadily, inspired by iconic models like the Land Rover Defender. Automakers are now gearing up to launch new SUVs that combine bold design, strong performance, and modern technology, with options across petrol, hybrid, and electric powertrains.
Mahindra is working on the Mahindra Vision S, which has already been spotted testing multiple times. Built on the NU IQ platform, it is expected to support petrol, diesel, and electric options. Likely engine choices could be similar to those seen in the XUV3XO, offering a good mix of power and efficiency along with a strong, upright stance.
Another major entrant will be the Jetour T2, coming to India through a partnership between Chery and JSW. Expected around Diwali 2026, this SUV will feature a hybrid setup. Globally, it combines a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with a battery pack, delivering both performance and electric driving capability. Its rugged design and possible all-wheel-drive system make it a strong contender.
The Tata Sierra EV is among the most awaited launches. Expected around 2026, it brings back a classic name in an all-electric avatar. The SUV will retain its signature silhouette while adding modern touches like a closed grille and full-width LED lighting, appealing to buyers looking for a blend of nostalgia and innovation.
Chery is also planning to introduce the Chery iCaur V23 in India. Available globally in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, it offers a claimed range of over 400 km for base variants and up to around 500 km for higher trims. This makes it a strong option in the rugged electric SUV category.
Lastly, the Renault Bridger, currently in the concept stage, shows promising potential. It is expected to feature a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine along with a possible electric variant. Likely to launch by 2027, it could mark Renault’s entry into the growing rugged SUV and EV segment.
Overall, these upcoming SUVs reflect a clear trend toward bold styling, versatile powertrains, and feature-rich offerings. The Indian SUV market is set to become even more competitive in the coming years.
