A man named Sunil Manjhi, who was jailed in Patna's Danapur on charges of selling liquor, died after falling seriously ill in custody. He was taken to PMCH hospital for treatment, but doctors were unable to save him. His death has triggered public outrage and protests.
Allegations Against Police
Sunil’s family alleges grave negligence. They claim 10 people were arrested in the same case, but the police released eight of them after allegedly accepting bribes. Despite Sunil's poor health, police reportedly refused to let him go and sent him to jail. The family was also denied permission to meet him during his time in custody.
Jailor Accused of Corruption
According to the family, when they visited Sunil in jail, the jailor asked for money, allegedly saying: "Give us the money he made from selling liquor, and we’ll get him treated." Sunil had been arrested on June 9 by the police’s Quick Mobile team while allegedly intoxicated in Gabthal Mushahari.
Public Anger Boils Over
Following Sunil’s death, enraged locals surrounded the Danapur police station, demanding accountability. Protesters later blocked roads and set fires, accusing the authorities of mistreating members of the Mushahar community.
Padma Shri Sudha Varghese Speaks Out
Social activist and Padma Shri awardee Sudha Varghese condemned the incident, saying the police were subjecting Mushahar community members to systemic abuse. “Even they have the right to live with dignity,” she said. “Unless a protest is held, the police will not act against those responsible.”
