AQI crosses 400: Breathing becomes difficult amid rising pollution, these 5 Ayurvedic remedies may help protect lungs

Air pollution in Delhi-NCR has reached alarming levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossing 400 in several areas. As a result, breathing has become difficult for many people, schools have been shut, and restrictions have been imposed on vehicle movement. Those with weak immunity are reporting symptoms such as cold, cough, eye irritation, and throat infections, while for asthma patients, the situation has become extremely hazardous.

While many people rely on allopathic medicines for relief, Ayurveda may also offer supportive ways to strengthen immunity and protect the lungs in such polluted conditions. In an exclusive conversation with TV9, Jaipur-based Ayurveda expert Dr Kiran Gupta explained how pollution affects the body and shared simple Ayurvedic remedies that can help reduce its impact.

How air pollution affects health
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution causes nearly 70 lakh deaths globally every year. Short-term exposure can lead to eye irritation, runny nose, cough, and worsening of asthma. Long-term exposure increases the risk of serious conditions such as heart disease, lung cancer, diabetes, weakened immunity, and even brain-related disorders. Fine particulate matter like PM 2.5 enters deep into the lungs, causing oxidative stress and inflammation, which can damage multiple organs.

Ayurvedic ways to boost immunity and protect lungs

Triphala for immunity and eye care
Dr Kiran Gupta says Triphala powder can be very effective in polluted conditions. Drinking Triphala water on an empty stomach helps detoxify the body and strengthen immunity. Triphala is made from amla, baheda, and harad. Amla is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, baheda has antibacterial properties, and harad supports digestion and immunity. Triphala water can also be used to gently clean the eyes in case of irritation, redness, or watering.

Rose water for eye relief
Rose water can help soothe eye irritation caused by pollution. Dr Gupta advises inhaling two drops of rose water daily. This can provide cooling relief and reduce discomfort in the eyes.

Herbal tea for throat infections
If pollution is causing throat irritation or infection, drinking herbal tea made with honey, ginger, and black pepper can be beneficial. This combination works as a natural immunity booster and helps reduce inflammation in the throat.

Turmeric milk to strengthen immunity
PM 2.5 particles weaken the immune system. Drinking turmeric milk daily helps strengthen immunity due to its antibacterial, antiseptic, and antioxidant properties. Turmeric milk is believed to help the body fight inflammation and may assist in flushing out toxins caused by pollution. Amla chutney or amla preserve can also be included in the diet for similar benefits.

Lunar Nadi Shuddhi breathing exercise
Lunar Nadi Shuddhi, a yogic breathing practice, helps cleanse the respiratory tract. When done regularly, it can reduce inflammation caused by pollution and improve lung function. This breathing technique increases nitric oxide production in the body, which helps relax and protect the respiratory passages.

As pollution levels remain dangerously high, these Ayurvedic measures may help support immunity and lung health. However, experts also advise limiting outdoor exposure, wearing masks, and seeking medical help if symptoms worsen.
