Ayushman Yojana 2026: These Treatments Are Not Covered Under PM-JAY – What Every Cardholder Must Know

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has emerged as one of India’s most impactful healthcare schemes, offering a health insurance cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year. For millions of low-income and vulnerable households, this scheme provides crucial financial protection against major medical expenses and life-threatening illnesses.
However, many beneficiaries believe that once they have an Ayushman card, all hospital expenses will be taken care of by the government. This assumption can lead to unpleasant surprises. Even in 2026, the Ayushman Yojana follows a defined list of inclusions and exclusions. Certain treatments, procedures, and medical services are not covered, and patients may still need to pay out of pocket.
Understanding these exclusions in advance is essential to avoid unexpected hospital bills. Here is a detailed and easy-to-understand breakdown of what is not covered under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY.
OPD Visits and Routine Checkups Are Not Covered
One of the most common misunderstandings about Ayushman Yojana is related to outpatient care. The scheme is primarily designed for hospitalization, not day-to-day medical consultations.
If you visit a hospital’s OPD (Outpatient Department) for minor health issues such as cold, cough, fever, body pain, or infections, the consultation fee will not be covered. Similarly, routine diagnostic tests like blood tests, X-rays, ultrasounds, or scans done without hospital admission are excluded.
In simple terms, unless you are admitted to the hospital, Ayushman benefits generally do not apply.
Cosmetic and Aesthetic Procedures Are Excluded
With the growing popularity of cosmetic treatments, many people assume these may be covered under health insurance schemes. However, Ayushman Bharat does not cover cosmetic or aesthetic procedures performed for appearance enhancement rather than medical necessity.
The following procedures are not covered:
-
Plastic or cosmetic surgery done purely for beauty purposes
-
Laser tattoo removal
-
Obesity reduction surgeries such as liposuction
-
Anti-aging treatments or procedures aimed at youthful appearance
Unless a cosmetic procedure is medically required due to trauma, burns, or severe deformity (and included under approved packages), patients must bear the cost themselves.
Dental Treatments and Vaccinations Not Included
Dental care is another major exclusion under the Ayushman Yojana. Most routine and advanced dental procedures are not covered, including:
-
Tooth cavity fillings
-
Root canal treatment (RCT)
-
Dental implants
-
Gum disease treatments
In addition to dental care, vaccinations and immunizations are also excluded. Whether it is a flu shot, preventive vaccine, or any other immunization, these costs are not reimbursed under PM-JAY.
Reproductive Treatments and Assisted Technologies
Advanced reproductive treatments are generally not covered under Ayushman Bharat. This includes:
-
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)
-
Surrogacy-related treatments
-
Fertility-enhancing procedures
These services may only be covered if a state government introduces special packages, which are limited and not universally applicable.
Long-Term Life Support and Certain Critical Conditions
Another important exclusion relates to patients who are completely dependent on long-term life support with no medical expectation of recovery. In such cases, the scheme may not extend coverage, as per policy guidelines.
The intention of PM-JAY is to support treatable and recoverable medical conditions, rather than indefinite critical care with no prognosis.
Why Knowing These Exclusions Matters
Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is undoubtedly a life-saving initiative, but it is not a blanket health cover. Knowing what is excluded helps beneficiaries plan better, avoid confusion at hospitals, and make informed healthcare decisions.
Before hospital admission, it is always advisable to:
-
Confirm whether your treatment is covered
-
Check the approved package list
-
Speak with the hospital’s Ayushman help desk
