On the birth anniversary of B. R. Chopra, an old debate often resurfaces—did he favor Raj Babbar over Amitabh Bachchan? While industry gossip has long suggested so, the truth is far more nuanced and rooted in circumstances rather than personal bias.
It’s true that B.R. Chopra’s brother, Yash Chopra, shared a legendary collaboration with Amitabh Bachchan through films like Deewar, Kabhi Kabhie, and Silsila. In contrast, B.R. Chopra became closely associated with Raj Babbar’s rise in Bollywood, leading many to assume a preference. However, this perception overlooks key facts. In the same year Yash Chopra directed Deewar (1975), B.R. Chopra produced Zameer under his banner, starring Amitabh Bachchan—showing that professional respect and collaboration did exist.
Raj Babbar’s association with B.R. Chopra has a compelling backstory. Before entering films, Babbar was a trained theatre actor from Delhi’s National School of Drama. During a talent contest organized by B.R. Chopra, Babbar impressed him deeply with his unique acting style—adding spontaneous expressions and improvisations during his audition. He was reportedly selected as a winner, but due to the The Emergency in India declared by the government, the results were never officially announced. This incident left a lasting impression on Chopra, who later gave Babbar significant opportunities.
B.R. Chopra’s films often revolved around strong social themes, and he saw potential in Raj Babbar for such roles. Films like Insaaf Ka Tarazu and Nikaah gave Babbar major visibility and established him as a serious performer. His bold and challenging role in Insaaf Ka Tarazu in particular remains widely discussed even today.
However, this doesn’t mean Amitabh Bachchan was sidelined or disliked. In fact, Bachchan continued to work in films produced under the B.R. Films banner, including Baghban and Baabul, both directed by Ravi Chopra. There was mutual respect between the two legends, even if they didn’t collaborate as frequently as Amitabh did with Yash Chopra.
In reality, B.R. Chopra’s association with Raj Babbar was shaped by timing, talent recognition, and circumstances like the Emergency—not favoritism. Both Raj Babbar and Amitabh Bachchan found their own paths under the broader Chopra legacy, each leaving a distinct mark on Indian cinema.
