As winter approaches in Delhi, doctors are warning residents that worsening joint pain may be linked to the city’s high pollution levels. Experts from AIIMS and major hospitals in the capital have raised concerns about the impact of smog and toxic air on joint health.
Pollution Increases Risk of Joint Pain
-
Dr. Uma Kumar, Head of Rheumatology at AIIMS Delhi, said studies show that exposure to air pollution increases the risk of joint pain by 12–18%.
-
Dr. Vimlesh Dhar Pandey of Fortis Hospital highlighted that PM 2.5 and other pollutants are contributing to rising cases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Delhi-NCR. Delhi is among the top 10 most polluted cities in the world.
Rheumatoid Arthritis Cases on the Rise
-
Dr. Uma Kumar noted that more patients living in polluted areas are developing RA without any family history or genetic predisposition.
-
Pollutants can trigger inflammation and oxidative stress, over-activating the immune system and worsening joint damage.
How Pollution Causes Pain
-
Studies show that exposure to PM 2.5, nitrogen oxides, and ozone increases the risk and severity of arthritis symptoms.
-
Living near busy roads and persistent traffic pollution is linked to higher arthritis risk.
-
Dr. Pulin Gupta of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital cited a 2025 study in the European Medical Journal, which confirmed strong links between air pollution and autoimmune diseases, including RA.
Takeaway:
Doctors advise residents in Delhi to be cautious during winter smog, especially those with pre-existing joint conditions. Minimizing exposure to outdoor pollution and using protective measures like masks and air purifiers may help reduce the risk of arthritis flare-ups.
