Diwali is a time for celebrations, colourful decorations and fireworks. However, amid the festive excitement, vehicle owners should also pay attention to the safety of their cars and two-wheelers. Sparks from rockets, flowerpots and other firecrackers can damage vehicle paint, plastic components, upholstery and other sensitive parts. In certain situations, even a small spark can trigger a fire.
Every year, incidents involving vehicles catching fire or getting damaged due to fireworks are reported during the festive season. A little precaution can help prevent unnecessary repair expenses and protect your vehicle from serious damage.
Here are six important precautions you should follow to keep your car or bike safe during Diwali.
1. Choose a Safe Parking Location
The first and most important step is to park your vehicle in a secure location, away from areas where people are lighting firecrackers.
If you have access to a covered garage or a suitable enclosed parking space, consider using it. Avoid parking your car on roadsides, in open areas where fireworks are being used or directly underneath balconies.
Firecrackers are frequently burst on rooftops and balconies, and burning particles can fall onto vehicles parked below. Therefore, choosing a location away from fireworks can significantly reduce the risk of damage.
2. Avoid Using Plastic or Nylon Car Covers
Many vehicle owners use plastic or nylon covers to protect their cars from dust, pollution and dirt. However, these covers can become a serious fire hazard during Diwali.
Most ordinary plastic and nylon covers are combustible and may catch fire when exposed to burning sparks. Once ignited, the flames can spread quickly and damage the vehicle underneath.
If covering your vehicle is necessary, use a properly certified fire-retardant cover. Otherwise, keeping the vehicle uncovered in a safe parking location is a better option.
3. Keep Windows and Sunroof Completely Closed
Before leaving your car parked during Diwali celebrations, make sure all windows are completely closed and the sunroof is securely locked.
Burning particles from fireworks can enter through even a partially open window and potentially damage the seats, upholstery or other interior components.
Two-wheeler owners should also ensure that the fuel tank cap and under-seat storage compartment are properly closed. This helps prevent sparks and burning debris from entering sensitive areas.
4. Stay Away from Flammable Materials
The surroundings of your parking space are just as important as the parking location itself.
Avoid parking near dry leaves, garbage piles, wooden materials, cardboard boxes or shops selling firecrackers. These materials can catch fire easily when exposed to sparks.
Before parking your vehicle, check the surrounding area and ensure that there are no easily combustible materials nearby. Keeping the parking space clean can help minimise potential fire hazards.
5. Never Leave Flammable Items Inside Your Car
Another important precaution is to remove potentially hazardous items from your vehicle before Diwali celebrations.
Avoid leaving the following items inside your parked car:
-
Perfumes and deodorant sprays.
-
Gas lighters and matchboxes.
-
Portable fuel containers.
-
Firecrackers and other fireworks.
-
Other combustible or pressurised products.
High temperatures and accidental exposure to sparks can increase the risk associated with certain products. Firecrackers should never be stored or transported casually inside a passenger vehicle.
6. Keep a Fire Extinguisher in Your Car
Keeping a suitable portable fire extinguisher inside your car is a useful safety measure throughout the year, not just during Diwali.
An ABC-type fire extinguisher can help tackle several common types of fires when used correctly. Make sure it is suitable for automotive use, properly maintained and easily accessible.
You can also keep a bucket of water or dry sand near your parking area for suitable small outdoor fire emergencies. However, never use water on a petrol, oil or electrical fire.
If a vehicle catches fire, move away immediately, keep others at a safe distance and contact emergency services. Do not attempt to tackle a large or spreading fire yourself.
Final Thoughts
Diwali celebrations should be enjoyable without putting your vehicle or property at unnecessary risk. A few simple precautions, such as choosing safe parking, avoiding ordinary plastic covers, keeping windows closed and removing flammable materials, can help prevent expensive damage.
Remember, protecting your car or bike during the festive season is not just about maintaining its appearance. It is also about preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of everyone around you. A little preparation before lighting the first firecracker can save you from significant trouble later.
