Lord Shiva has various incarnations. One of them is Lord Nataraja, known as the King of Dance. This form of the Lord is dancing. You may have seen statues of this form in many places. You may have noticed another thing about this statue: a creature is crushed beneath the Lord's feet. Have you ever wondered who this creature is and why the Lord has crushed it beneath his feet? Recently, an Instagram video has gone viral, explaining this information very well.
Instagram user Namrata Mohan (@thetemplegirl) is a content creator who shares interesting information related to God and spirituality through videos on her account. Recently, she posted a video in which she explains what is buried beneath Lord Nataraja's feet. This creature is named Apasmara. In South India, this creature is also known as Muyalaka. It is a dwarf creature with a rather frightening expression. It is half human and half shadow.
Who was Apsamara?
In the video, Namrata explains that Apsamara is present in every Nataraja statue. Narrating the story, she explained that millions of years ago, when sages and monks became arrogant about their knowledge and power, their rituals and rituals became their weapons. Once, strange creatures emerged from their havans: snakes, demons, and finally, a dwarf. This creature was no ordinary dwarf, but was born out of confusion and perplexity. This creature was born out of ego. Its name was Apsamara. It roamed the world, instilling arrogance and confusion in people. Because of it, even intelligent people lost their understanding and wisdom.
Why did Shiva crush her under his feet?
When the Apsamara began harming even the sages and ascetics, he realized how dangerous this creature he had created was. Then Lord Shiva appeared. Not armed like a warrior…but like a dancer. He placed one foot on the Apsamara, crushing him. He did not want to kill him, because ignorance can never be destroyed. He began dancing on top of the Apsamara, never allowing him to rise. Through this dance, the Lord established peace, happiness, and wisdom in the world, keeping ignorance crushed under his feet. The statue of Nataraja teaches us the lesson that to move forward, we must abandon our ignorance and ego. This video is rapidly going viral and has received over 9.8 million views.
