The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have officially punched their ticket to the IPL 2026 grand finale, putting on a masterclass performance in Qualifier 1 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. The defending champions crushed the Gujarat Titans by a massive 92 runs, securing their second consecutive final appearance and their fifth in IPL history.
While Bengaluru celebrated a near-flawless victory, the narrative of the match came down to a single, chaotic over in the first innings—where Gujarat's campaign derailed due to two catastrophic fielding blunders in the span of just three balls.
Patidar’s Golden Lives: The Turning Point
RCB set a monumental total of 254 runs in their 20 overs, a target engineered by absolute carnage in the middle order. Virat Kohli provided a solid baseline with a 25-ball 43, and Krunal Pandya contributed a crucial 43-run knock. However, it was skipper Rajat Patidar who turned the game into a one-sided blowout.
The defining moment of the match arrived in the 14th over, bowled by Prasidh Krishna. Gujarat had a golden opportunity to remove Patidar when he was sitting on a modest score of just 18 runs:
Capitalizing flawlessly on his two new lifelines, Patidar went on a rampage, striking at an astronomical rate of over 281 to finish with an unbeaten 93* off just 33 deliveries.
Gujarat's Chase Collapses Like a Pack of Cards
Chasing a daunting target of 255, the Gujarat Titans' batting order completely disintegrated under pressure. The top order offered no resistance: captain Shubman Gill was cleanly bowled for a mere 2 runs, and Sai Sudharsan suffered an unlucky dismissal, getting out hit-wicket for 14.
While wicketkeeper Jos Buttler showed temporary intent with a fiery 29 off 11 balls and Rahul Tewatia fought a lonely battle to secure a half-century, the rest of the lineup offered virtually no backup. Nishant Sindhu (5), Washington Sundar (8), and a duck from Jason Holder doomed the chase.
RCB's bowling unit reaped the rewards of a mounting required run rate:
-
Jacob Duffy: 3 wickets (Pick of the bowlers)
-
Rasikh Salam Dar: 2 wickets
-
Bhuvneshwar Kumar: 2 wickets
Gujarat was ultimately bundled out for 162 runs, snapping their direct route to the final.
One Last Lifeline for the Titans
The Playoff Safety Net: Despite the heavy defeat, Gujarat's title hopes are not completely dead. Thanks to their top-two regular-season finish, the Titans have earned a secondary lifeline in Qualifier 2.
Gujarat will travel to New Chandigarh for a high-stakes encounter on May 29th. They will square off against the survivor of the Eliminator match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals, set to take place at the New Chandigarh Stadium on May 27th at 7:30 PM.
