West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly condemned the Delhi Police after a video surfaced showing an alleged assault on a woman and her child. In a sharp post on X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee claimed that Bengalis are being harassed under the guise of a crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
The controversy centers around Mohammad Ajmal, a toilet caretaker in Delhi’s Geeta Colony, and his daughter-in-law Shajinoor, who works in a similar role in East Delhi. According to Ajmal, both are residents of Malda, West Bengal, and possess valid Aadhaar cards.
“My Daughter-in-law and Her Baby Were Beaten”
Ajmal claims that on July 25, two unidentified women checked Shajinoor’s Aadhaar card and took it with them. The next day, two men allegedly abducted Shajinoor and her one-and-a-half-year-old child, accusing them of being Bangladeshis. He further alleged that they were taken to a park, beaten, and released only after paying a bribe of ₹25,000.
Mamata Banerjee reacted strongly, posting the video of the mother and child, calling it an act of “linguistic terror” and “state-sponsored violence” against Bengalis.
“Atrocious! Terrible! Even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence… under the BJP’s regime,” Banerjee wrote.
Detained Again, Despite Documents
Ajmal also said that police from Madhu Vihar police station returned later that night and detained both his daughter-in-law and wife again. Despite producing Aadhaar cards, he alleges they are still being branded as Bangladeshis.
Meanwhile, Geeta Colony police have initiated an investigation, checking Ajmal’s documents to verify their authenticity.
"1903" data-end="2131">The Delhi Police are currently running a campaign to identify and deport illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. As part of this, authorities are scrutinizing IDs to distinguish between genuine Indian citizens and undocumented migrants.
The matter has now taken a political turn, with Mamata Banerjee accusing the BJP-led Centre of targeting Bengalis and misusing law enforcement under the pretext of national security. Investigations into the allegations are ongoing.
