Kali Prasad Pandey, born on 28 October 1946 in Ramjita village of Gopalganj’s Kuchaykot block, rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most talked-about political figures of Bihar. Known for his bold style, towering influence, and Robin Hood image, he left behind countless stories of power and generosity. He passed away on 22 August at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after a prolonged illness.
Political Debut as an Independent MLA
Pandey’s political journey began in 1980 when he was elected as an independent MLA. His independent victory showcased his immense popularity at the grassroots level.
Stunning Lok Sabha Victory from Jail
In 1984, during the wave following Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Kali Pandey contested the Lok Sabha elections while in jail. Against all odds, he not only won but also secured the highest number of votes among all MPs in that election. Later, he formally joined the Congress party.
Mentor to Strongman Shahabuddin
Siwan’s controversial MP Mohammad Shahabuddin, who later became a prominent strongman in Bihar politics, considered Kali Pandey as his guru. Shahabuddin’s political career began on similar lines as Pandey’s—by winning an MLA seat as an independent. Over time, their association grew stronger, and Shahabuddin admired Pandey’s fearless personality.
Confronting the Jungle Party in Gopalganj
In the 1980s, Gopalganj’s Diara region was troubled by the criminal activities of the Jungle Party. Pandey took a stand against them and played a key role in reducing their dominance, further cementing his Robin Hood-like image.
Association with Lok Janshakti Party
In 2003, he joined Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and was made its national general secretary, spokesperson, and UP observer. After nearly 17 years, he returned to the Congress in 2020 and attempted to contest from Kuchaykot, but was unsuccessful.
Bollywood Connection
Pandey’s larger-than-life persona even inspired Bollywood. The 1987 film Pratighat is believed to have drawn inspiration from his character. His blend of power, popularity, and controversy made him a figure of cinematic appeal.
Allegations and Controversies
Throughout his career, Pandey faced several serious allegations, including his alleged role in the 1989 Patna Junction bomb attack on Nagina Rai. However, none of the charges could ever be proven in court despite persistent police efforts.
