Mahindra has increased the prices of its popular off-road SUV, leaving many buyers surprised. The price hike goes up to ₹43,500 across several variants, making the Thar noticeably more expensive than before. However, there is still a bit of relief for budget buyers, as the base AXT 2WD 1.5L diesel manual variant continues to start at ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), unchanged from its earlier price.
The biggest jump has been seen in the higher variants. The LXT 4WD automatic diesel variant is now priced at ₹17.62 lakh after a hike of ₹43,500, while the petrol automatic version has gone up by ₹41,500 to ₹16.86 lakh. Similarly, the manual diesel and petrol 4WD variants have also become costlier by nearly ₹37,000–₹39,500. Even the 2WD diesel manual LXT variant has seen a notable increase, now costing ₹12.69 lakh.
Despite the price increase, the Thar continues to offer strong performance with multiple engine options. Buyers can choose between a 1.5L diesel, a more powerful 2.2L diesel, and a 2.0L turbo petrol engine. These engines are known for delivering solid performance both on highways and challenging off-road terrains, which remains the SUV’s biggest selling point.
On the features front, the Thar still holds its ground well. It comes equipped with a modern digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear parking camera, cruise control, rear AC vents, and other convenience features. This balance of rugged capability and modern tech is what keeps it popular among SUV enthusiasts.
Even with the price hike, the Thar continues to be one of the most desirable off-road SUVs in India, but buyers will now have to stretch their budget a bit more to bring this iconic vehicle home.
