For the first time in Mumbai’s history, an FIR has been filed for feeding pigeons—a step taken following a strict directive by the Bombay High Court. The case was registered at the Mahim Police Station against an unknown individual who was reportedly feeding pigeons from a moving vehicle.

Historic First in India

This marks the first-ever FIR in India for such an act. The Mumbai Police registered the case under the High Court’s recent order, which prohibits feeding pigeons in public spaces and mandates legal action against violators.

HC’s Sharp Rebuke to BMC

On July 30, during a hearing on a petition filed by animal welfare advocates, the Bombay High Court came down hard on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for not enforcing the pigeon feeding ban effectively. The court instructed the civic body to:

• File FIRs against individuals feeding pigeons in public places

• Control pigeon populations in designated areas

• Prevent obstructions faced by BMC workers executing these orders

Despite administrative bans already in place, the court noted widespread non-compliance and directed stricter enforcement.

Stricter Enforcement Ahead

In its order, the court made it clear: any further violations will face legal consequences. The BMC is now under pressure to act decisively to reduce health hazards and crowding associated with uncontrolled pigeon feeding.
