NEET Aspirant Found Dead in Bhagalpur Hostel Hours After Move-In, Family Alleges Harassment

The mysterious death of a 17-year-old NEET aspirant in Bihar’s Bhagalpur has triggered shock and outrage, with her family alleging harassment and demanding a thorough investigation.

Srishti Singh, a resident of Araria, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room at a private hostel—Vindhyavasini Lodge in Khanjarpur—under the Barari police station area. The incident occurred just hours after she had shifted into the hostel.

Body Discovered After No Response
The घटना came to light late at night when a student staying in a nearby room knocked on Srishti’s door but received no response. Growing suspicious, she alerted others. The hostel administration and fellow residents gathered, and Srishti’s cousin Ankush was informed. After he arrived, the door was forcibly opened, revealing the teenager hanging with a dupatta.

Police Begin Investigation, Phone Seized
Police reached the spot soon after being informed, took custody of the body, and initiated an investigation. A forensic team collected evidence from the room, and the student’s mobile phone has been seized for analysis.

Preliminary findings indicate that Srishti had been in contact with someone via WhatsApp shortly before her death, sharing messages, videos, and audio clips. Investigators are closely examining this digital evidence. CCTV footage has also surfaced, reportedly showing the student appearing uneasy while entering the hostel earlier that day.

Had Shifted Hostel the Same Day
According to officials, Srishti moved into the new hostel around 4 pm on Sunday after vacating her previous accommodation due to renovation work. Her parents and cousin had accompanied her during the move and left for home later in the evening.

Tragically, they received news of her death while on their way back and rushed to Bhagalpur. The grieving family has been left devastated by the sudden loss.

Family Alleges Harassment
In a formal complaint, Srishti’s father has accused a boy of harassment, alleging that inappropriate remarks made by him may have driven his daughter to take the extreme step.

Cause of Death Awaited
Barari police station in-charge Bittu Kamal stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report. Authorities are investigating all possible angles, including abetment and mental distress.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns about student safety and mental health, especially among those preparing for competitive exams away from home.
