In a major crackdown, the Odisha Vigilance Department raided multiple locations linked to Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, Chief Engineer of the Rural Works Division, on charges of disproportionate assets. Simultaneous searches were carried out at seven places across Angul, Bhubaneswar, and Pipili in Puri.
During the raid on Sarangi’s Bhubaneswar flat, he panicked upon seeing vigilance officers and attempted to throw bundles of Rs 500 notes from his window. The officials recovered these notes in the presence of witnesses. In total, cash worth approximately Rs 2.1 crore was seized — Rs 1 crore from the Bhubaneswar flat and Rs 1.1 crore from his residence in Angul.
A large team comprising 8 DSPs, 12 Inspectors, and other staff executed the operation based on a search warrant from the Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul.
The vigilance department continues to investigate Sarangi’s financial dealings, including bank accounts and properties, to uncover the full extent of alleged corruption and disproportionate wealth accumulation.
