A same-sex marriage case from Chhatarpur has once again drawn public attention, after a fresh complaint alleged harassment by family members and police authorities. The matter escalated on Thursday when one of the women approached the Superintendent of Police, accusing both her family and the local police of physical and mental abuse.
In her written application to the SP, the woman stated that she wishes to live with her partner of her own free will. She alleged that despite being adults, their relationship was not accepted by their families or society. She further claimed that she was mistreated at the police station and later assaulted and threatened at home after being sent back with her family. Seeking urgent protection, she requested permission to meet and live with her partner, citing danger to her life and property.
Five-year relationship led to temple marriage
According to available information, the two women — aged 23 and 21 (names changed) — had been in a relationship for nearly five years. They reportedly met while working at a restaurant, after which their friendship gradually turned into a long-term relationship. Recently, the two decided to solemnise their relationship by marrying at a temple.
During the ceremony, one woman assumed the role of the groom and applied vermillion on her partner’s forehead and placed a mangalsutra, pledging lifelong companionship.
Family opposition and police intervention
The situation intensified when both families learned about the relationship and the marriage. Strong objections were raised, following which the families filed missing person complaints at local police stations after the women left their homes. Police later traced both women and brought them to the Civil Lines police station, where a tense situation reportedly continued for several hours on Wednesday.
After counselling, the police sent both women back with their respective families, a move that later became the subject of allegations.
Allegations against police
On Thursday, one of the women reached the SP’s office and alleged that the police did not listen to her statement and forcibly handed her over to her family. She claimed that after returning home, she was beaten and threatened and feared for her safety if she was not allowed to live independently with her partner.
Police response and investigation
The police department has stated that the complaint submitted to the Superintendent of Police is being examined. Officials said that all allegations will be investigated and appropriate action will be taken based on findings.
