Amidst the growing dispute between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, farmer leader Naresh Tikait made such a controversial statement on the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty that it was condemned all over the country. Finding himself cornered and seeing the attitude of the people of the country, Naresh Tikait has apologized for his statement.

Naresh Tikait said, "We were not even aware of the matter, the farmer knows the value of water, but our statement was presented in such a twisted manner as if we were some anti-social elements, traitors of the country. We felt very ashamed when someone told us that such a thing is going on outside. So we realized that such a thing is wrong. We have withdrawn our statement. Our people found the statement wrong, the situation in the country is so bad, relations with Pakistan are deteriorating, so we have expressed regret over our statement. We should not have said this, it must have slipped out of our mouth. Those who have expressed displeasure over my statement are our own, they have the right. The whole country is together, whatever action the government has to take against Pakistan, take it, the whole of India is with the government."

India has stopped the river water by cancelling the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. Farmer leader Naresh Tikait objected to this decision and said that this decision is wrong.
