In many cities, including Ahmedabad, a 10-rupee back pain medication is now being used for drug abuse. A shocking trend has emerged that young people in the city are becoming addicted to a drug called gabapentin. Gabapentin is not listed on the Narcotics Schedule, making it easily available at medical stores. This has led to a trend among young people to mix the drug into cold drinks and consume it.

Drinking medicine mixed with cold drink
Our Team spoke with Jasu Patel, president of the Chemists and Druggists Association, about this issue. He explained that gabapentin is commonly prescribed for nerve pain, neuropathic pain, sciatica, and chronic back pain. Doctors specifically instruct patients to take this medication before bedtime and to sit up in bed for a few minutes before getting up in the morning, as it can cause dizziness and loss of balance.
Drinking medicine mixed with cold drink
On the other hand, a dangerous trend has emerged of mixing the pill into cold drinks for intoxication. It has been reported that some young people are taking 75mg to 200mg tablets mixed into cold drinks. While a mere 75mg can cause dizziness, taking doses of 300–400mg or more can pose serious risks. It is commonly available at medical stores. This inexpensive drug is being used more for intoxication than for relieving the pain of a pinched nerve. It is easily available and causes addiction quickly. Overdoses can even lead to death.
Dr. Piyush Mittal, head of the Spine Institute at Asarwa Civil Hospital, told us that it provides relief from nerve pain. However, if taken in excess, it can cause drowsiness and drowsiness. Therefore, it should be taken only as prescribed. Excessive use can lead to addiction.
The drug affects nerve cells
As a general guideline, gabapentin relieves pain and seizures by modulating calcium channel activity in nerve cells and reducing abnormal brain excitability. Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and sometimes swelling in body parts. This medication should be taken only as directed by your doctor. Stopping the medication suddenly may increase seizures.
