The government has revised the windfall tax on petroleum product exports, following which the latest petrol and diesel prices have been released across the country. The increased levy applies to exports of petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF), while retail fuel prices for consumers continue to be announced separately by oil marketing companies.
Despite the hike in the windfall tax, there has been no immediate change in the retail prices of petrol and diesel for domestic consumers. Fuel rates in major cities remain unchanged, offering temporary relief to vehicle owners and transport operators.
The Centre has increased the export duty on petrol to ₹3.5 per litre, while the total levy on diesel exports has been raised significantly. The tax on aviation turbine fuel has also been revised upward as part of the latest fortnightly review. The decision is aimed at ensuring adequate domestic fuel availability and responding to volatility in global crude oil markets.
Windfall tax is a special levy imposed on oil producers and exporters when they earn unusually high profits due to sharp increases in international crude oil prices. The government reviews these rates every two weeks based on global oil prices, refining margins, and domestic supply conditions.
Consumers should note that the revised windfall tax primarily affects petroleum exports and does not automatically increase petrol or diesel prices at fuel stations. Retail fuel prices continue to depend on multiple factors, including international crude oil prices, exchange rates, taxes, and pricing decisions taken by oil marketing companies.
Motorists are advised to check the latest city-wise petrol and diesel prices through official oil company platforms before refuelling, as fuel rates can vary from one city to another due to differences in local taxes and transportation costs.
