Pitru Paksha lasts for 16 days. It is a time to express gratitude to our ancestors. During this fortnight, ancestors are worshipped. It is said that our grandfathers and great-grandfathers visit us during these days. They come down from above and watch over our homes.

The Garuda Purana also states that ancestors can come to our homes during these days in any form, be it animals or birds. Therefore, if an animal comes to our door during these days, don't kill it or chase it away. Give it something to eat. This makes us feel good. There are five animals that are considered very auspicious if they visit our homes during Pitru Paksha.

1. Crow – Brings Messages from the Ancestors
The relationship between Pitru Paksha and crows is very old. Crows are considered a form of ancestors. If a crow sits on your roof or balcony and calls out, or quietly eats the food you have set out, understand that your ancestors are pleased with you. If you offer grass to your ancestors, a crow is the first to eat it. It is believed that if it eats the food, the sins of the ancestors in the house are removed and any money stuck in the house is recovered.

2. Black Ants – Bring Poverty
Often, a line of black ants is seen in the kitchen or courtyard. People kill them out of boredom, but avoid this during Pitru Paksha. Seeing black ants is an auspicious sign, meaning poverty in your home will diminish. Throwing a little sugar or flour on them during these days is highly beneficial. This brings prosperity to your work and business, and helps clear your debts.

3. Black Dog – Protects from trouble.
The black dog is the vehicle of Bhairav ​​Baba. It is also said to protect Yamaraj. If a black dog comes to your door during Pitru Paksha and starts wagging its tail, do not let it go empty-handed. Offer it a piece of bread or a biscuit. Doing so will avert any troubles that may befall you. The problems caused by Rahu and Ketu in your horoscope will also be reduced, and your ancestors will protect you.

4. Cow – It houses 330 million gods.
In our religion, the cow is given the status of a mother. It is said that it has 330 million gods in its stomach. During Shraddha, the first morsel of food is taken for the cow; it is called Gogras. If during Pitru Paksha, a cow comes to your doorstep and meows, nothing is more auspicious than this. Feed it the first pole. Offer it Shraddha food. This prevents illness from entering the home, children prosper, and Lakshmi remains.
