Denmark's postal service will stop after 400 years: Denmark's state-run postal service, PostNord, is going to completely stop the delivery of letters by December 30th. On December 30th, the nearly 400-year-old tradition of letter delivery will come to an end. Letters have been delivered through the postal service in Denmark since 1624, but the number of letters sent in the country has seen a massive decline of nearly 90 percent.
Postal service was being done since 1624
Denmark has been delivering letters through a postal service since 1624, but the number of letters sent in the country has dropped sharply by about 90 percent. PostNord said in a statement that the rise of online shopping has led to a sharp decline in letter delivery demand, forcing the company to focus more on parcel delivery. Denmark is among the world's most digitalized countries.
Remaining post boxes auctioned
Earlier this month, the red post boxes were put up for sale, and nearly 1,000 were sold within just three hours. A box in good condition fetched 235 pounds, while a more worn one sold for 176 pounds. Another 200 post boxes will be auctioned in January.
Although PostNord is closing in Denmark, the company will continue its services in Sweden. PostNord has stated that unused postage stamps in Denmark will be refunded within a specified timeframe.
Another company will provide the service
However, it's not the case that no company will provide postal services in Denmark. People will be able to send their letters through another Danish company, Dao, which already delivers letters in the country. However, Dao says that its research shows that people between the ages of 18 and 34 send two to three times more letters than other age groups. Danish law requires the option of mailing letters to remain in the country. This means that if Dao also stops delivering letters in the future, the Danish government will be forced to assign this responsibility to another company.
