Punjab Government Announces ₹10 Lakh Free Treatment for Every Family Under New Health Scheme

The Punjab government has announced a major healthcare initiative aimed at providing financial relief to millions of residents across the state. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has approved the implementation of the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme, which will come into effect from January 2026. Under this scheme, every family in Punjab will be entitled to free and cashless medical treatment worth up to ₹10 lakh per year.

According to the government, the scheme is expected to benefit nearly 3 crore (30 million) citizens, marking a significant step toward strengthening healthcare security in the state. Earlier, the treatment limit was ₹5 lakh per family, which has now been doubled.

What Treatments Are Covered Under the Scheme?

The Chief Minister’s Health Scheme will provide comprehensive medical coverage at empanelled government and private hospitals across Punjab and New Chandigarh. The coverage includes:

  • Treatment for serious and chronic illnesses

  • Major and minor surgeries

  • ICU and critical care services

  • Diagnostic tests and medicines

  • Pre- and post-hospitalization expenses

The entire process will be cashless and paperless, ensuring that patients do not have to make any upfront payments. Treatment can begin immediately after identity verification at the hospital.

The primary objective of the scheme is to ensure that no family delays or avoids treatment due to financial constraints, thereby reducing both economic and mental stress on patients and their families.

Who Is Eligible for the Benefits?

The scheme will benefit families in both rural and urban areas of Punjab. It is especially helpful for those who previously avoided medical care due to high costs or were forced to take loans for treatment.

Importantly, the scheme is universal in nature:

  • Government employees

  • Pensioners

  • Private-sector workers

  • Ordinary citizens

All are eligible without any income limit.

A dedicated digital platform will allow beneficiaries to check the list of empanelled hospitals, track treatment status, and register complaints, making the system transparent and user-friendly.

This landmark decision is being seen as a major step toward ensuring accessible and affordable healthcare for every household in Punjab.
