Tata, Mahindra and Renault Gear Up to Launch Rugged Compact SUVs

India’s SUV market is set for a major boost as leading automakers Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Renault prepare to introduce a new range of rugged sub-4 metre SUVs. Driven by rising demand and tax advantages in this segment, these upcoming models aim to combine durability, performance, and practicality for Indian roads.

These compact SUVs not only promise higher sales volumes for manufacturers but are also well-suited for urban driving conditions while retaining a tough, off-road-inspired appeal.

Mahindra Vision S: Bold and Feature-Rich
Mahindra is expected to launch the production-ready version of its Vision S SUV by late 2026 or early 2027. The SUV is likely to retain its boxy design, featuring square windows and thick rear pillars. Key highlights may include a panoramic sunroof, touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, and multiple airbags.

Under the hood, it could offer a 1.5-litre diesel engine sourced from the XUV 3XO, along with possible petrol and hybrid options. Buyers may also get both manual and automatic transmission choices.

Tata Scarlett: Versatile Powertrain Options
Tata Motors is planning to introduce the Scarlett SUV in 2027. Built on a flexible monocoque platform, the SUV is expected to support both internal combustion and electric powertrains.

Engine options may include a turbo-petrol unit similar to the Curvv, a 1.2-litre turbo petrol from the Nexon, and a new 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. An all-wheel-drive option and an electric variant could further enhance its appeal.

Renault Bridger: Compact Yet Spacious
Renault’s upcoming Bridger SUV will sit between the Kiger and Duster in its lineup. Despite being under 4 metres in length, the company claims it will offer one of the most spacious cabins in its class.

The SUV is expected to feature a rugged design with a bold black grille, LED lighting with an illuminated Renault badge, a sporty bumper, and a front skid plate. Built on the R-GMP platform, it is likely to come with multiple engine options.
