The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially awarded the highly anticipated IPL 2026 final to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Over the course of 19 action-packed seasons, the premier T20 tournament has traveled to various iconic locations both within India and internationally.
While some venues have become absolute favorites for hosting the ultimate trophy match, a few world-famous stadiums have rarely had the opportunity to host the season finale.
The Ultimate Leader: Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad (4 Finals)
The colossal arena in Ahmedabad stands as the undisputed king of IPL finals. The 2026 title match will mark the fourth time the venue has hosted the grand finale.
-
Host Years: 2022, 2023, 2025, and now 2026.
-
With its massive seating capacity, it has comfortably cemented itself as the BCCI's go-to choice for high-stakes, maximum-revenue cricket matches.
The Strong Runner-Up: MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai (3 Finals)
Affectionately known as Chepauk, the legendary home ground of the Chennai Super Kings holds the second-highest record for hosting title clashes.
-
Host Years: 2011, 2012, and 2024.
-
Known for its knowledgeable crowd and spin-friendly turf, Chepauk remains a historic pillar of IPL history.
The Mid-Tier Regulars (2 Finals Each)
A total of five iconic grounds share the middle tier, having each hosted the IPL grand finale exactly twice:
-
M. Chinnaswamy Stadium (Bengaluru)
-
Eden Gardens (Kolkata)
-
Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium (Hyderabad)
-
DY Patil Stadium (Navi Mumbai)
-
Dubai International Cricket Stadium (Dubai)
The Surprising Lows: Venues with Just 1 IPL Final
When it comes to the lowest frequency of hosting an IPL final, the list features a surprising contrast between a global powerhouse and a historic international backup ground. Both have hosted the final only once in tournament history:
1. Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai (2018)
Despite being the official headquarters of Indian cricket and the home of the high-profile Mumbai Indians, the iconic Wankhede Stadium has surprisingly hosted the IPL title match just once—back in 2018 (where the Chennai Super Kings defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad). While it regularly hosts playoff qualifiers and opening matches, it rarely gets the final slot.
2. New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg (2009)
When the entire second season of the IPL was forced to shift to South Africa in 2009 due to the general elections in India, Johannesburg's premier ground was chosen to host the historic overseas finale. It remains a unique, one-off chapter in the league's history where the Deccan Chargers lifted the trophy after a thriller against RCB.
The Structural Shift: The distribution of these high-profile matches clearly shows a modern shift in Indian cricket infrastructure. While historic legacy venues like the Wankhede and Eden Gardens used to dictate terms, the arrival of massive, state-of-the-art mega-stadiums like Ahmedabad has completely rewritten where the biggest prizes in T20 cricket are handed out.
