Fatty liver disease is rapidly becoming a common lifestyle-related condition. Earlier seen mostly in adults, it is now increasingly affecting young people and even children. Poor eating habits, excessive intake of oily and spicy foods, lack of physical activity, and irregular routines are the main reasons behind this rise.
In the early stages, fatty liver often shows no clear symptoms, but if ignored, it can lead to serious liver problems. Health experts believe that fatty liver can be effectively controlled—and even reversed—through timely dietary changes. Dr. Pramod Tripathi recently shared on social media that certain vegetables work almost like natural medicine for fatty liver when consumed correctly.
Below are three vegetables recommended by doctors, along with the right way to include them in your diet.
Bottle Gourd Should Be the Base of Your Meals
Bottle gourd (lauki) is considered extremely beneficial for people suffering from fatty liver. Doctors recommend making it a regular part of daily meals.
To consume it correctly, cook 150 to 200 grams of bottle gourd thoroughly. Prepare it as a simple vegetable dish using garlic, cumin, tomato, and black pepper. If needed, a small quantity of chickpea lentils can be added for extra nutrition.
Bottle gourd helps prevent fat accumulation in the liver by improving insulin regulation and supporting digestion. It is best eaten with lunch or dinner several times a week.
Cruciferous Vegetables Help Detox the Liver
Vegetables from the cruciferous family are highly recommended for liver health. This group includes cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and mustard greens.
Doctors suggest consuming 75 to 100 grams of these vegetables in cooked form, five to six times a week. These vegetables activate liver enzymes responsible for detoxification and help reduce inflammation, which plays a key role in managing fatty liver.
Steaming or lightly sautéing these vegetables is preferred over deep frying to retain their benefits.
Beetroot Should Be Taken Like Medicine
Beetroot is another powerful vegetable for liver health, but moderation is essential. According to doctors, beetroot should be treated more like medicine than a regular vegetable.
Limit consumption to 50 grams at a time and eat it only two to three times a week. It can be consumed cooked or lightly boiled.
Beetroot helps flush out excess fat stored in the liver and improves blood circulation. However, excessive intake may increase blood sugar levels, so it should not be overconsumed.
Doctor’s Additional Advice
Garlic and cumin are especially beneficial when used along with these vegetables, as they support liver metabolism. People who do not have diabetes can also consume small amounts of beetroot juice and cumin water two to three times a week. Overuse should be avoided.
