For many people, the day begins with a cup of tea or coffee. Some drink it for energy, while others simply out of habit. But very few realize that certain foods commonly paired with tea or coffee can silently damage health. These combinations can trigger acidity, gas, bloating, nutrient deficiencies, and even hormonal imbalances.
The problem is that most people are unaware of these harmful pairings. If you want to stay healthy, it’s important to know which foods should never be eaten with tea or coffee.
Deep-fried foods
Clinical dietitian Aanchal Sharma explains that pairing tea or coffee with samosas, bread pakoras, or other deep-fried snacks is one of the worst habits. Tea contains tannins, which react with oily and spicy foods, causing acidity, gas, and bloating. This combination also blocks iron absorption, contributing to deficiencies.
Iron-rich foods
Experts warn against consuming iron-rich foods along with tea or coffee. Tea contains oxalates that bind with iron, preventing the body from absorbing it. Over time, this can lead to iron deficiency. For this reason, avoid pairing tea or coffee with foods like spinach, lentils, or iron supplements.
Curd and yogurt-based foods
Curd should never be eaten with tea or coffee. Tea has a warming nature, while curd is cooling. When taken together, they create an imbalance in the digestive system. Many people eat paratha with curd and tea, but this combination can cause heartburn, indigestion, and bloating.
Even tea and biscuits aren’t a healthy combination
Dietitian Geetika Chopra states that biscuits—often made with refined flour, sugar, and unhealthy fats—are not the right match for tea. When eaten together, they can lead to a sudden spike in blood sugar, making the combination unhealthy despite being a common habit.
These simple dietary mistakes, when repeated daily, can harm your digestion and reduce nutrient absorption. Being mindful about what you consume with tea or coffee can help maintain better overall health.
