Trump's decision is a sharp reversal from his administration's previous promise to "aggressively revoke visas" for Chinese nationals; particularly those associated with the Communist Party or sensitive research fields. "We plan on letting their students come. It's very important, 60,000 students. It's very important. But we're going to try to have a good relationship with China," Trump said. He added that Beijing must ensure Washington gets access to rare earth magnets or it will face a 200 per cent tariff, but confirmed that Chinese students will be allowed to study in the US.
