Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has supported the central government's decision to play cricket with Pakistan, calling it a step in the right direction toward peace. Speaking at a press conference, she said, “We are not enemies of Pakistan. If peace is the goal, dialogue—not war—is the solution.”
“Only PM Modi Can Resolve the Kashmir Issue”
Mufti added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the mandate and power to resolve the Kashmir issue, urging the Centre to take a more diplomatic route. “War will only bring destruction—especially for Jammu and Kashmir,” she warned, pointing out the disproportionate impact armed conflict has on the region.
“Aman Ki Baat, Izzat Ke Saath”
Highlighting her party’s core message, Mufti said, “PDP's motto is ‘Aman Ki Baat, Izzat Ke Saath’. When our party was formed, the region was battling militancy and Task Force oppression. My father, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, stood against this and chose the path of peace.”
She emphasized that foreign policy decisions inevitably impact the people of Kashmir and urged the government to consult and consider local sentiments.
“India Should Focus on the Economy, Not Arms Race”
Addressing India’s defense spending, Mehbooba Mufti said, “We don't have a high-quality economy, yet we’re in a rush to buy new weapons. Look at China’s growth, and even Pakistan’s crisis—what have wars given them? Nothing but debt.”
She argued that India should prioritize youth development and economic growth rather than escalating military posturing.
Criticism of SIR and Alleged Targeting of Muslims
Mehbooba also strongly criticized the ongoing Special Intensive Review (SIR) in Bihar, claiming that Muslims are being targeted under the guise of security checks. “You say throw Rohingyas into the sea. Is this the kind of justice we want? SIR appears to be another way to harass a particular community,” she alleged.
