Currently, due to the shortage of LPG, there are long queues of customers. However, the government has washed its hands off the situation, saying that this situation has arisen due to the opposition. But why does an LPG cylinder always contain 14.2 kg of gas? Why doesn't an LPG cylinder contain 14 kg or 15 kg of gas? This number seems a bit strange. But the answer to why an LPG cylinder always contains 14.2 kg of gas is even more surprising. What is the logic behind this?
The compulsion of 14.2 kg?
Actually, there is no compulsion to keep 14.2 kg of gas. This decision can be changed. But there is a logic behind it. The common man should be able to use the gas cylinder easily. It should not only be transported but can also be brought and taken to the house. There should not be any extra burden on the customer's pocket. Therefore, this cylinder is considered standard. The use of domestic LPG cylinders in India started in the 1950s. At that time, a foreign company named Burma Shell was supplying gas. At that time, this company first decided the size and weight of the cylinder. Later, this company was renamed Bharat Petroleum (BPCL).
What are those three reasons?
Burma Shell decided on the magic number of 14.2 kg based on three major reasons. To make the gas cylinder easier to lift and carry, the gas tank weighed 14.2 kg. So, the total weight of an empty iron gas tank is approximately 29 to 30 kg. According to a survey at the time, this gas tank could be lifted. If the gas tank weighed more than 30 kg, it would have been difficult to lift and carry.
Another major reason is that a family's needs were estimated at that time. At the time, experts estimated how much gas a middle-class family would need for a month. Research showed that this amount of gas would last approximately 30 to 45 days. That is, once refilled, it would last for a month.
Once a new cylinder is booked, it becomes easier for companies to deliver it. Based on this research, the gas agency realized that a gas cylinder lasts a month or a month and a half. This allowed them to adjust their supply schedules accordingly. This model has been successful for many years.
