Bangladesh will face heavy losses due to boycotting the T20 World Cup 2026, which will cost crores of rupees

The Bangladesh Cricket Board's decision to withdraw from the 2026 T20 World Cup appears to be backfired. Bangladesh could lose billions in ICC revenues if they refuse to play in India.

Ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, a major decision by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is now making headlines. Bangladesh will not only suffer cricketing losses but also face a significant financial cost after refusing to participate in the mega tournament in India. According to reports, this decision could result in a direct loss of approximately US$27 million, or approximately ₹240 crore (approximately ₹240 crore).

The decision was taken after an ultimatum from the ICC.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) had clearly stated to Bangladesh that if it refused to play in India, another team would be given the opportunity. At a meeting on Wednesday, the ICC clarified this stance in the presence of all member countries. Despite this, the Bangladesh government and cricket board remained firm on their decision.

Bangladesh's sports advisor, Asif Nazrul, said after a meeting with the team's players that they did not accept the ICC's proposal. He said they had security concerns in India and would not make a decision under pressure.

How much will the financial loss be?

According to a PTI report, Bangladesh will lose approximately 3.25 billion Bangladeshi taka (approximately $27 million) in annual revenue from the ICC due to its non-participation in the T20 World Cup. This amount comes from the ICC's revenue share. Furthermore, earnings from broadcasting rights and sponsorships will also be affected. It is estimated that the BCB's total revenue will decline by 60 percent or more in the current financial year.

Danger looms over India tour too

This decision could also impact future bilateral series. It is reported that India's tour of Bangladesh in August-September may also be cancelled. The TV rights for this series were considered crucial for Bangladesh, generating revenue equivalent to many series with other countries.

Players will suffer the biggest loss

Although the Bangladesh Board has assured the players that they will not lose their match fees, the real blow will be to their careers. The opportunity to play on a major stage like the T20 World Cup is special for every player. Top players value competition and recognition more than money, and this decision will deprive them of that opportunity. Overall, the decision to boycott the T20 World Cup 2026 could prove to be a major challenge for Bangladesh cricket in the future.
