The rising cases of coronavirus are a cause of concern for the whole world these days. This time the outbreak started in countries like Hong Kong-Singapore, and China, and the risk of infection started increasing rapidly in the Indian population as well. Omicron and its sub-variants are considered to be the main reason for the rising cases. The highest number of infection cases are of the JN.1 variant and the sub-variants (NB.1.8.1 and LF.7) generated by the mutations in it.
The information received from the US along with Asian countries is also increasing the fear of corona in the minds of the people. According to local media reports, not only are the cases of infection increasing here, but more than 300 people are also dying every week.
Dr. Tony Moody, Professor of the Infectious Diseases Division at Duke University Medical Center, US, says, the reality is that we are still seeing deaths, the virus is still not only spreading but also killing people.
It is also worth noting here that the NB.1.8.1 variant, which is causing both infection and death cases in the US, is the same variant that is currently being seen as the most active in India as well. Given the nature and risks of this variant, the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified it as a variant of monitoring, till now it was kept as a variant of interest. A variant of monitoring means that now this form of the virus requires attention and monitoring on a priority basis.
So can this variant, which is not considered to be of much concern in most reports, actually be as dangerous as Delta? Looking at the increasing number of death cases in the US, this question is natural.
According to official data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 350 people died in the US last week. However, most of these deaths have been seen in people who were at high risk, such as those who already had comorbidities or weakened immunity.
Medical experts have suggested several factors that can be attributed to this recent surge in reported cases and deaths as a result of the disease.
According to CDC data, as of April, only 23% of adults aged 18 years and above have taken the updated COVID-19 vaccine. This figure is 13 percent in children.
Vaccinologist and director of the Atria Research Institute, Dr. Gregory Poland, has considered not getting vaccinated, or not taking the updated vaccine, as the main reason for the increase in the number of COVID-related deaths.
It is worth noting that many companies have updated their vaccines keeping in mind the changes seen in the new variants. Health experts advise that all people should continue taking coronavirus vaccines like flu to protect themselves from corona. This is even more important for those over 65 years of age or those at high risk.
Medical experts say that the immune system created by the vaccine weakens over time, in addition, the virus is constantly changing. This is the reason why a new outbreak is being seen again this time. Due to the increase in the NB.1.8.1 variant, many serious cases have been reported in Asia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, given which all people need to be alert.
