Election officer PC Modi announced the results and said that Sudarshan Reddy got 300 first preference votes, while CP Radhakrishnan got 452 votes.

After the voting was over, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed that the opposition remained completely united in the voting and all its 315 MPs participated in the voting. For the election of the 17th Vice President of the country, the electoral college included 233 elected members of Rajya Sabha (currently five seats are vacant), 12 nominated members and 543 elected members of Lok Sabha (currently one seat is vacant). There were a total of 788 members in the electoral college (currently 781). Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had decided to stay away from the election.

PM Modi cast his vote first
Voting for the Vice Presidential election began at 10 am on Tuesday and ended at 5 pm. Prime Minister Modi was the first to vote. Modi cast his vote at the polling booth set up in Room No. 101, Vasudha of Parliament House along with Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Jitendra Singh and L. Murugan.

Those who cast their votes early included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, former Prime Minister H.D. Devegowda, Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav, Congress general secretaries Jairam Ramesh and Syed Nasir Hussain. The 92-year-old former Prime Minister arrived at the polling booth in a wheelchair. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge were seen walking hand-in-hand to the polling booth.

Engineer Rashid came to cast his vote from jail.
Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and many other leaders also voted. Jailed MP Engineer Rashid also participated in the voting.

During the monsoon session of Parliament, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President citing health reasons, although he had two years left in his term. Who is Sudarshan Reddy? 
Reddy, the joint candidate of the opposition, is a former Supreme Court judge and has been the Lokayukta of Goa. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Hyderabad-based International Arbitration and Mediation Centre. Reddy retired from the apex court in July 2011. In a judgment, he declared the Salwa Judum formed by the Chhattisgarh government to fight Naxalites as unconstitutional. As a Supreme Court judge, Reddy ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to take all steps to bring back unaccounted money illegally kept in bank accounts abroad.
