India has successfully test-fired the Agni Prime missile from a train for the first time. This has joined a select group of countries that possess a rail-based missile launch system. The Agni Prime missile has a range of 2,000 kilometers.

For the first time in the country, Agni Prime missile has been successfully launched from a train. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh gave this information by tweeting on Thursday. The Defence Minister wrote that India has successfully test fired the medium range Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher system. This next generation missile has been designed for a strike range of up to 2000 km. It is also equipped with many advanced features. Defence experts believe that the rail based mobile launcher system will prove to be a major milestone in the strategic defence capabilities of the country.

First-of-its-kind test

The Defence Minister explained that today's launch was the first of its kind from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher. It has the capability to move on the rail network without any preconditions. This provides users with mobility across the country and allows launches with low visibility and reduced reaction time.

The Defence Minister said, "Congratulations to DRDO, Strategic Forces Command (SFC) and the Armed Forces on the successful flight test of the medium-range Agni-Prime missile. This successful flight test has placed India among a select group of countries that have the capability to develop canisterised launch systems from mobile rail networks."

Agni Prime is a nuclear-capable, new-generation, advanced version of the Agni class of missiles. It is a two-stage, canister-launched missile with a maximum range of 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers. It is lighter than all previous Agni-class missiles.
